What a year! We are employed with our second company and feeling a little disallusioned with them at the moment. One thing we have learned in a big way is there are no guarantees in this business. When you think you are hired on with a company you get there on your first day and are “**injected, inspected, detected, infected, neglected, and selected” (or not). Upon being hired at our current company, we were 2 of 18 drivers. By the end, we were down to a room of just 7.
After you start driving for them you are constantly under the gun for various reaons. Miscommunication between you and your dispatcher is standard practice. When you’re finally both frustrated, (you more then he) you pick up you phone and spend 20 of you precious airtime minutes to clear up the miscommunication. Ha! Forget about them calling you!
Most of you know Kevin developed blood clots and was horribly sick back in April. I have been driving solo since then and he joined me about mid-May on the road and has been the chef, secretary, and navigator. He’s fully recovered but can’t go back to driving until the DOT doctor says he can (which will hopefully be this next week.
Driving solo has been good for me. It’s had a different set of challanges. Fighting for miles is the first and biggest problem. Teams and owner/operators have first pick of miles and solo drivers get the leftovers. Miles are what it’s all about!
Soon we will be driving as a team again… But there are no guarantees!
